Residency Learning Experiences

The PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency Program at Ascension Genesys Hospital includes required 4 - 6 week learning experiences, elective learning experiences, and required longitudinal learning experiences (each 6 - 12 months in duration).

Each resident’s research project will be presented at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference. Residents are required to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and will be encouraged to participate in a poster presentation.

  • 4 - 6 Week Learning Experiences (with midpoint and final evaluations)
    • Required Learning Experiences       
      • Orientation - 4 weeks
      • Decentralized Pharmacy Practice - 4 weeks
      • Critical Care (MICU or SICU) - 4 weeks
      • Drug Information/Drug Use Policy - 6 weeks
      • Antimicrobial Stewardship - 6 weeks
      • Cardiology - 6 weeks
    • Elective Learning Experiences 
      • Administration - 4 weeks
      • Ambulatory Care - 4 weeks
      • Critical Care (alternate ICU location) - 4 weeks
      • Neurotrauma ICU / Progressive Respiratory Care Unit - 4 weeks
      • Transitions of Care - 4 weeks
      • Additional Experience in Required Rotation    
  • Required Longitudinal Experiences (with quarterly evaluations)
    • Drug Information/Drug Use Policy - 6 months  
    • Medication Safety - 6 months
    • Precepting and Education - 12 months
    • Residency Research Project - 12 months
    • Practice Management - 12 months
    • Staffing (every 3rd weekend and 3 holidays per year) - 12 months   
  • Additional Experiences
    • Longitudinal participation in a hospital committee
    • Participation in Pharmacy Education Development and Lecture Series (PEDALS) teaching program through Ferris State University
      • Includes presentation of 1 hour of continuing education, a journal club, a patient case presentation, and facilitation of an integrated case studies course
    • Involvement as a co-preceptor of students from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor and Ferris State University
    • Professional pharmacy organization involvement opportunities with local and state organizations
