Hematology and Oncology Fellowship

About the Program:

The goal of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship is the education of professionals in the care of patients with blood dyscrasias and malignancies. The Fellowship recognizes that there are many facets to the education of the competent Hematology/Oncologist. The individual must possess the knowledge necessary to diagnose and treat a wide variety of blood dyscrasias and malignancies. Just as important are the humanistic qualities necessary to apply knowledge to the care of patients suffering from potentially fatal/fatal disorders. The competent Hematologist/Oncologist must have a working knowledge of other disciplines such as Radiation Oncology, Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, Blood Banking, Surgical Oncology, Breast Surgery, Genetics, Infectious Disease, Critical Care Medicine, et cetera. The Hematologist/Oncologist should be able to function as a community resource on such subjects as Cancer Screening and Environmental Carcinogens. 

During the course of a 3 year Fellowship the individual must become familiar with the large volume of past literature in the fields of Hematology and Oncology and must also learn to critically evaluate the present body of literature. The Hematologist/Oncologist will become an educator to students, residents, and fellows, as well as lay groups. They will also develop the skills to continue the life-long process of education that will allow them to remain competent in an ever changing sub-specialty.
